What the calculator estimates
The headline result is an estimated personal annual footprint in tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent per person per year (tCO2e/person/year). It also estimates an indicative household total where household inputs are used.
- Household inputs divided by household size: home electricity, heating fuels, water/wastewater and household waste/recycling.
- Personal inputs counted directly: private vehicle travel, public transport, taxi/rideshare, flights, diet, food waste, shopping and services.
- Work-from-home energy: excluded from the personal calculator to avoid double-counting employer-related activity.
National and region-adjusted benchmark
The National Average badge uses an embedded national per-capita greenhouse-gas benchmark dataset. The app currently uses Our World in Data per-capita greenhouse gas emissions including land-use emissions, expressed as tCO2e/person/year. Embedded offline values are included so the app works without an internet connection; when served online, the app can refresh benchmark data from the published OWID CSV and cache it locally.
If a region/state is selected, the comparison is labelled Region-Adjusted Average. This is not an official regional statistic. It is the same national-average lifestyle profile recalculated with the selected regional electricity factor so users can see the effect of local electricity intensity. Changing the region alone does not change the quick personal estimate; detailed electricity and EV records use the selected regional electricity factor because those are explicit user activity data.

Units, privacy and export
- The calculation uses metric base units, with miles, US gallons and pounds converted where those inputs are selected.
- The calculator is designed to run locally in the browser/app package. Your Free assessment inputs remain on your device unless you choose to share a result.
Important limitations
This is an educational personal-footprint estimate, not a certified greenhouse-gas inventory, product carbon footprint, legal compliance report or offset certificate. National per-capita benchmarks are territorial country averages and do not perfectly represent personal consumption-based lifestyle footprints. Material decisions should use reviewed, versioned and source-documented production factors.
